Your Site Search Is Losing You Sales You Already Won
Most e-commerce search boxes fail on typos, plurals, and synonyms, quietly turning ready to buy visitors into bounces before they see a single product.
A shopper who uses your search bar isn't browsing anymore. They know what they want, they typed it in, and they're one click from paying you. That's about as high intent as traffic gets. So why do so many stores treat their search box like an afterthought?
The zero results page is a business decision
Type "hoody" instead of "hoodie" into most default Shopify or WooCommerce search and you'll get nothing back. Type "runing shoes" and you'll get nothing. Search for a product using the exact words printed on the box, and if the word order doesn't match your product title, you'll still get nothing. None of that is really a typo problem. It's a search engine that only matches exact strings, shipped as if that were a reasonable default for a store selling to actual humans who make actual typos.
Every one of those searches ends the same way: the customer leaves. Not because you didn't have what they wanted. Because your search told them you didn't.
Where it actually costs you
Pull up your analytics and look at searches with zero results. Most store owners have never checked this number, and most are shocked by it once they do. It's rarely a handful of odd queries. It's usually a meaningful slice of your highest intent traffic, quietly bouncing off a gap nobody on your team owns.
A few things that separate a search box that sells from one that just sits there:
- Fuzzy matching that tolerates typos, plurals, and different word order
- Synonym handling, so "sneakers" and "trainers" pull the same products
- Merchandising control, so you can push bestsellers or promotions into top results instead of whatever the default algorithm ranks first
- Real fallback content on a zero results page instead of a dead end
None of this is exotic. It just needs someone to have actually built it instead of accepting whatever shipped with the platform out of the box.
This is a build problem, not a marketing problem
Marketing often gets blamed for conversion problems that are really product problems. You can run every retargeting campaign in the world to bring a visitor back to a search box that already failed them once. It won't work nearly as well as fixing the search box.
This is exactly the kind of gap we build for at Cedrix: the unglamorous pieces of a storefront that quietly decide whether a visitor converts or leaves. If you want a fast, low risk way to see what a properly built version of your storefront could look like, our free MVP offer is a good place to start. Or if you already suspect search is bleeding you sales, just get in touch and we'll take a look.
